BELOW THE KNEE AMPUTATION

BELOW THE KNEE AMPUTATION

Below the knee amputation is surgery to remove all or part of your foot or your leg below the knee cap. It is also called BKA. You may need a BKA for a health problem that causes poor blood flow, such as diabetes. You may have a severe infection or a blood clot. You may have been in an accident that injured your leg beyond repair. You may also need a BKA if you have cancer, or were born with a deformed leg. Amputations are either planned or done in an emergency. Caregivers will only remove as much of your foot or leg as is absolutely necessary. After a BKA, you may be fitted for a prosthesis (artificial leg) for your residual (remaining) limb.

You and your caregiver will work together to decide if other treatments should be included in your treatment plan. You may need hyperbaric oxygen treatment to help heal infections. You may need surgery to provide new blood vessels to your leg if you have blood flow problems. If you have cancer, you may need surgery to remove the tumor and graft a donor bone in its place.
AFTER YOU LEAVE:
Medicines:
Keep a written list of the medicines you take, the amounts, and when and why you take them. Bring the list of your medicines or the pill bottles when you see your caregivers. Learn why you take each medicine. Ask your caregiver for information about your medicine. Do not use any medicines, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, herbs, or food supplements without first talking to caregivers.

Always take your medicine as directed by caregivers. Call your caregiver if you think your medicines are not helping or if you feel you are having side effects. Do not quit taking your medicines until you discuss it with your caregiver. If you are taking medicine that makes you drowsy, do not drive or use heavy equipment.
Ask your caregiver when to return for a follow-up visit.
Keep all appointments. Write down any questions you may have. This way you will remember to ask these questions during your next visit.

Activity guidelines:
You may feel like resting more after surgery. Slowly start to do more each day. Rest when you feel it is needed, but try to exercise two to three times each day. Do not put weight on the residual limb until caregivers tell you it is OK.

Change your position often to move fluids in your lungs, decreasing your chances of getting pneumonia. This also decreases the chance of pressure sores on your skin, and keeps your muscles and tendons from tightening.

Avoid lifting heavy objects.

Ask your caregiver when you can shower, bathe and swim.

Talk to your caregiver if you have questions or concerns.
Exercises to improve your balance and increase your strength:
The center of gravity in your body has changed because you suddenly weigh less after an amputation. You will have to learn your new center of gravity so that you can keep your balance.

The following exercises will help to strengthen your muscles and improve your balance. Do these exercises while holding onto a chair. Be careful not to hit your residual limb on the chair while doing these exercises.

Stand on your toes.

Do knee bends.

Hop on your foot.

Practice standing without holding on to the chair.
Constipation:
If you are constipated, you may have a hard time having a bowel movement (BM) Do not try to push the BM out if it is too hard. Walking is the best way to get your bowels moving. Eat foods high in fiber to make it easier to have a BM. Good examples are high fiber cereals, beans, vegetables, and whole grain breads. Prune juice may help make the BM softer. Caregivers may give you fiber medicine or a stool softener to help make your BMs softer and more regular. You can also buy these medicines at a grocery or drug store.

Eat a healthy diet:
Eat healthy foods from all of the five food groups: fruits, vegetables, breads, dairy products, meat and fish. A healthy diet may help you feel better and have more energy. It may also help you heal faster.

Your caregiver may want you to eat a diet high in calcium. Foods high in calcium are milk, cheese, ice cream, fish, and dark green vegetables like spinach. Eating high calcium foods helps prevent bone loss.

Caregivers may also want you to eat high protein and high iron foods. Foods high in protein are meat, eggs, fish, beans, and nuts. Foods high in iron are dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, cabbage, or lettuce.

It can take time getting used to a new diet. Special cook books may help the cook in your family find new recipes.
Drinking liquids:
Men 19 years old and older should drink about 3 liters of liquid each day (about 13 eight-ounce cups). Women 19 years old and older should drink about 2 liters of liquid each day (about 9 eight-ounce cups). Good choices for most people to drink include water, juice, and milk. If you are used to drinking liquids that contain caffeine, such as coffee, these can also be counted in your daily liquid amount. Some food items, such as soup and fruit, also add liquid to your diet. Ask

Nightmare

Nightmare

((Please bear in mind this was only a dream, actual events did not occur, and more than likely won't...i just got in a creative writing mindset. Not implying the characters used in the dream would ever do anything like this, it is a dream only))

The darkness engulfed her like a delicate blanket in the night, protecting her from the outside world as a shield penetrable only by herself. Soon, the darkness grew lighter, but not with the yellowish light of the sun, but a grayish light that first would appear like a cloud, creeping into her thoughts like a snake coils around prey. The darkness, the protective darkness, would lift completely off of her, and she was walking, walking through the streets, somehow lost for the time being in her own disorientation.

She stopped walking, took a deep breath, and took her surroundings. She was in Midian for sure, in the Apocalypse district. She smiled in spite of herself, it had begun to feel like home after all. She resumed her walk, and made her way towards the Den, the place she called home. As she walked through the ruins, her pace quickened, though it felt as if she were floating over the ground at increasing speeds towards the mound of scrap metal that housed her family. She came to a slow, confused stop as she saw Ayr in his customary crouch on the ground before the Den's entrance, blazing fire lighting his eyes through his mask. A feeling of pure joy passed through her, for it had seemed forever since she had seen him. She ran to him, put her arms around his neck and her eyes filled with tears from her elasion upon seeing her fox guardian again.

Her joy soon faded however, for he quickly pushed her away with such force she landed on the ground in front of him. "I find it....incredibly annoying...when you get anywhere near me...." he smirked, looking down at her disdainfully.

"W...what? What are ye talking about?" she'd force a smile, thinking he was trying to tease her. "Dinna be silly Ayr-kun..." she'd move back to him, wrapping slender arms around his neck in another hug. He recoiled, in revulsion, and struck her face with his hand, his chest heaving in anger and he said not another word to her before storming off.

"A...Ayr-kun...what....what did I do....?" her eyes were no longer filled with happiness but of pain and agony. Her hand rested on her cheek where he had struck her, already red from the impact and stinging that was far greater than mere physical pain.

The darkness engulfed her once more.

When it cleared away again it was not the grey mists of Midian that greeted her, but a dimly lit room, walls made of rusted metal, with a single chair in its center, a chair which she herself was seated, hands bound behind her back, the single light in the room suspended directly over her head. She lifted her head, her red locks were draped heavily over her face but she could do little to move them, her hands bound so well she could not even move them an inch. She heard footsteps echoing on the metal floors, coming closer and closer, until a dark figure emerged, dagger unsheathed and glinting in the light. She lifted her head to look at him, and before the gasp had left her lips, Chi had gripped her face in his hand and forced her to look directly into the light, blinding her. He ran the dagger down her chest and whispered into her ear, his usual, condescending tone reverberating over her fur. "Welcome home..."

She blinked as her eyes adjusted to the light, but was thrust into darkness again as he let her go and her vision went into spots. "Home? What the hell are ye talkin about Chi...are ye mad holding me here like this?! Lemme go!" she'd shout.

"Nonsense...you are going to leave that pathetic rabble you call family, and join us..." he smirked, grabbing a chair out of her line of sight and pulling it in front of her, back of the chair facing her as he straddled it.

"I'd never join KAOS..." she snarled, "Me family is the Pack!"

"WAS!" came another voice, this one feminine. Another figure merged from the dark. Her hair was long, blonde, and tied into braids that hung about her shoulders under a black beret. "But not anymore..." she smiled wickedly.

"Shadowkat...." she's whisper. "Why are ye doin this ta me?!"

"Because I found your desire to bring balance to Midian troublesome. Midian was meant to be my playground, a playground of chaos...spiraling out of control for my amusements. Balance....is....well...boring...." she'd snicker. Chi climbed off the chair in front of Alayni and was replaced by Shadowkat herself.

"I wont join ye...ye be knowin that. Ye might as well kill me first..." Alayni would reply resolutely.

"Oh I just merely see that as a challenge to convince you otherwise!" she'd smirk.

"What tha hell do ye even care if I be joinin ye or not...i
